Basketball Recap: West Wendover Comes Up Short

If West Wendover was riding high fresh off their 52-27 takedown of Coral Academy of Science - Reno on Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The West Wendover Wolverines fell to the Pershing County Mustangs 45-41. The Wolverines haven't had much luck with the Mustangs recently, as the team's come up short the last five times they've met.

When it comes to explaining why West Wendover lost on Saturday, don't look at Shay Neaman. Despite the final result, she posted 22 points and six boards. The dominant performance gave Neaman a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Anaya Hernandez, who had four points along with nine rebounds and six steals.

Even though they lost, West Wendover smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.

Pershing County got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Riley Harvey out in front who went 5 for 12 on her way to 14 points in addition to five boards and four steals. Harvey is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Kyra Cerni, who earned 14 points and seven rebounds.

West Wendover's record is now 8-8. As for Pershing County, they have been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-4 record this season.

West Wendover will square off against Yerington at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Yerington will roll in looking for their seventh straight win, something West Wendover surely won't give up without a fight. As for Pershing County, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 54-24 victory against Silver Stage on the 21st.
