Baseball Recap: Briggs Makes It Four in a Row at Home

For some reason, the away team has come away with the win the last four times Briggs and Independence have met, but the home crowd finally got their W on Wednesday. The Bruins were the clear victors by a 17-2 margin over the 76ers. The Bruins haven't had any issues with the 76ers recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.

Brailyn Hernandez made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in May of 2024. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last six games he's played.

In other batting news, Cameron Griffith and Jaxon Mitskevich did most of the damage at the plate: Griffith scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances, while Mitskevich scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. Mitskevich has become a key player for Briggs: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 1-2 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Marcus Rodgers, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-2.

Briggs' win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-2. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Independence, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season.

Briggs will challenge Columbus Torah Academy at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Independence, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Cristo Rey at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
