Basketball Recap: Newark Memorial Comes Up Short

Newark Memorial lost against Mission San Jose back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Newark Memorial Cougars fell 57-48 to the Mission San Jose Warriors. The Cougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

When it comes to explaining why Newark Memorial lost, don't look at Angelina Baca. Despite the final result, she posted 24 points. The dominant performance gave Baca a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sydney Scott, who scored 11 points.

Mission San Jose's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Esha Patel led the charge by going 6 for 12 en route to 14 points in addition to five boards and five blocks. Mission San Jose is 2-1 when Patel posts five or more blocks, but 6-7 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Adhuna Devineni, who put up 12 points and four steals.

Newark Memorial's loss dropped their record down to 6-11. As for Mission San Jose, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-8.

Newark Memorial will square off against Livermore at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Mission San Jose, they will face off against James Logan at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. James Logan will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something Mission San Jose surely won't give up without a fight.
