Hillcrest had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They claimed a resounding 61-15 win over the Corona Panthers. That's more bragging rights for the Trojans, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.
Hillcrest was led to victory by Reyez Ortiz and Alexander Villasenor. Ortiz gained 53 total yards and three touchdowns, while Villasenor rushed for 27 yards and one score. Those 27 rushing yards gave Villasenor a new career-high. Speaking of playmakers, who could forget Matthew Ramos, who went all the way with a kickoff return for a touchdown.
Most of the squad's points came courtesy of special teams, who contributed 31 in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Nicholas Bernal, who ran a punt back for a touchdown. Another bright spot was a kickoff return touchdown from Ramos.
Hillcrest didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Bernal, Dylan Bailey, and Issah Noor picked up one apiece. Bernal is also on a roll when it comes to defended passes, as he's now defended at least one in each of the last three games he's played dating back to last season.
Corona's loss came despite strong showings from Royce Hudson and Benjamin Campusano. Hudson picked up 92 receiving yards and one touchdown, while Campusano picked up 53 receiving yards.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hillcrest is headed away from home for the first time to take on Santiago at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Corona, they will head out to square off against Bloomington at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
