After a strong start by ranked teams over the weekend, No. 1 Mater Dei
opens its season Friday against No. 13 Duncanville in a game sure to
have major implications for future editions of the MaxPreps Top 25 high school
football rankings. See this week's rankings below.
Mater Dei went 5-0 last spring and was the top-ranked team in California while Duncanville went 10-2 and lost in the 6A-Division 1 state semifinals.
California earned early national bragging rights as No. 3 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) knocked off Miami Central (Fla.) 35-12 on Friday. Three-star running back
Jabari Bates accounted for three touchdowns while
Jairus Satele led the way in the trenches for the Braves. The loss dropped the Rockets nine spots to No. 24.
Another nationally ranked marquee matchup saw Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) cruise past Hawaii power St. Louis (Honolulu) 42-21 behind five rushing touchdowns from 2022 Boston College commit
Cam Barfield. The Las Vegas power moved up one spot in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 to No. 11.
The best individual performance came from five-star
Travis Hunter of Collins Hill (Suwanee, Ga.) as the Eagles beat Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.) 36-10 in the final game of the Corky Kell Classic. The 2022 Florida State commit hauled in 13 receptions for 232 yards and two touchdowns while adding a 28-yard touchdown pass and interception. The Eagles moved up one to No. 9 and are the top-ranked team in Georgia.
Milton (Ga.) is the lone team to join the MaxPreps Top 25 starting the year with a 45-0 win over Hapeville Charter (Atlanta). Loaded with talent, the Eagles and face a very good North Cobb (Kennesaw) team Aug. 27.
Thirteen more MaxPreps Top 25 teams get started this week, including a top 10 showdown between No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) hosting No. 8 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore).
