The Exeter Monarchs are taking a road trip to face off against the Morro Bay Pirates at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Exeter is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.
Exeter fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Hanford West on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Huskies by a score of 9-8. The Monarchs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Cade McElmoyl put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and six unearned) runs off nine hits. What's more, he gave up only two walks, the fewest he's had since back in March. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
McElmoyl wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Madden Pasos, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
While Morro Bay didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Everything went their way against Santa Maria on Thursday as they made off with an 11-1 win. The Pirates might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by ten runs or more this season.
Evan Davis was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBI, three doubles, and one stolen base. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Quentin Crotts, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-4.
Morro Bay kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Santa Maria only managed five hits.
Morro Bay pushed their record up to 11-3 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Exeter, their loss dropped their record down to 11-3.
Saturday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Exeter hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .336. However, it's not like Morro Bay struggles in that department as they've averaged .353. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
