Wesley Vega spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on four hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because James Logan is 4-2 when he allows at most one earned run, but 3-4 otherwise.
On the hitting side, James Logan saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Evan Yau, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, while Newark Memorial put up plenty of runs on Friday, the same can't be said for Mission San Jose. The Cougars put the hurt on the Warriors with a sharp 12-0 win. The result was nothing new for the Cougars, who have now won four games by seven runs or more so far this season.
King Lopez-Archibald made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-2. Those two hits gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Andres Romo and Malosi Gaoteote did most of the damage at the plate: Romo scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-1, while Gaoteote scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2. Those two runs gave Romo a new career-high. Christian Ortiz also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Newark Memorial was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .438. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mission San Jose only posted a batting average of .045.
Newark Memorial pushed their record up to 9-2 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games. As for James Logan, they now have a winning record of 7-6.
James Logan skirted past Newark Memorial 2-0 in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Colts since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
