The Azusa Aztecs's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their third straight loss. They took a 42-34 hit to the loss column at the hands of Mayfield. Azusa was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Mayfield apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2019.
Azusa's lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Evelin Villalva, who scored 10 points along with 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Villalva hasn't dropped below two steals for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Ruby Untoria, who scored 10 points along with 8 rebounds and 3 steals.
Even though they lost, Azusa were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mayfield only pulled down six.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mayfield to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kristen Awakuni, who scored 17 points. Awakuni is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now stole two or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Jenna Domingo, who scored 10 points along with 8 assists and 6 steals.
Azusa's loss dropped their record down to 6-4. As for Mayfield, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-4.
Azusa will head out on the road to face off against Roosevelt at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Mayfield, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Chadwick at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in California (Chadwick is ranked 785th, while Mayfield is ranked 770th).
