Santa Ynez is a perfect 10-0 against Morro Bay since May of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. Santa Ynez will challenge Morro Bay at 4:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, Santa Ynez didn't have quite enough to beat Santa Maria and fell 2-1. The matchup marked the Pirates' lowest-scoring game so far this season.
Santa Ynez saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Diego Pulido, who scored a run while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Morro Bay). They blew past Orcutt Academy 26-2 on Tuesday. While the Pirates didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Colton White made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in hits (two).
In other batting news, Cruz Wilkinson was a standout: he went 3-for-5 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. Another player making a difference was Vanden Nelson, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Morro Bay always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .521. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Orcutt Academy only posted an OBP of .273.
This is the second loss in a row for Santa Ynez and nudges their season record down to 3-4. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only 1.5 runs. As for Morro Bay, they pushed their record up to 4-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road.
Santa Ynez skirted past Morro Bay 2-1 in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Santa Ynez since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
