Escambia High School is the alma mater of two great running backs - the NFL's all-time leading rusher Emmitt Smith hails from the Pensacola school, as does current Cleveland Browns back Trent Richardson. However, neither of them hold the school record for rushing yards in a single game.
That honor now belongs to Danikeei Hollowell, who ran for 446 yards and five touchdowns on 25 carries in a 70-54 win over Rutherford (Panama City) last week. Hollowell's effort is one of the top performances among this week's National High School Football Stat Stars.
Hollowell, who is the reported rushing leader in Florida with 909 yards, broke the school record of 419 yards, previously held by Richardson.
Two other athletes broke state records. Landon North of Riverton (Kan.)
broke the state single-game receiving record in Kansas with 326 yards in a loss to Girard. Meanwhile, Brendon Fitch of Swartz Creek (Mich.)
broke the Michigan single-game passing yardage mark with 606 yards against Kearsley (Flint).
Another player to keep an eye on is Justin Sawmiller of Kenton (Ohio). With 11 catches for 284 yards and four touchdowns, Sawmiller now has 319 career receptions for 4,477 yards. He needs just 30 more receptions to tie the state record in Ohio of 349. The national record of 358 career receptions was set last year. The state record for yardage in a career is 5,172, set by another Kenton player, Tommy Petitt. The national record is 6,356 yards.
