The Harbor Pirates's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their 14th straight loss. They took a serious blow against Aptos, falling 46-17. While losing is never fun, Harbor can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1110th, while the Mariners are ranked 444th).
Despite the defeat, Harbor saw an underclassman step up: Julianne Sanguinetti scored nine points.
Berkeley Ashby had an outrageously good game for Aptos as she almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds. Ashby has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Another player making a difference was Gabby Wickham, who scored 11 points along with three steals.
Harbor dropped their record down to 6-16 with that loss, which was their sixth straight on the road. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 19.3 points per game. As for Aptos, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-8 record this season.
Harbor won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against the Lions at 12:00 p.m. on February 3rd. Luis Valdez Leadership Academy comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 20 points in their last six games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse. Aptos does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
