The Silver Creek Raiders will take on the Overfelt Royals at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Silver Creek is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.2 runs per game this season.
The home team had won the previous five meetings between Silver Creek and Mt. Pleasant, and Silver Creek kept the tradition alive. The Raiders were the clear victors by a 10-4 margin over the Cardinals on Thursday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Raiders considering their two-run performance the game before.
Giovanni Mejia spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits and racked up six Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Nate Spellman, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Fonseca, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Meanwhile, Overfelt came up short against San Jose on Thursday and fell 13-9.
BRANDON GONZALEZ was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over three innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off only two hits. GONZALEZ was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Overfelt's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 6-3 (and 1-3 when he doesn't).
In other batting news, HUGO JERONIMO was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. That triple was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was ALFREDO GALLEGOS MEDINA, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Overfelt has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-6 record this season. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Silver Creek, they pushed their record up to 12-4 with the victory, which was their third straight at home.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. Silver Creek has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Overfelt struggles in that department as they've been averaging 11.4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Silver Creek took their win against Overfelt in their previous meeting back in March by a conclusive 7-0 score. Will the Raiders repeat their success, or do the Royals have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
