Southwest SD extended their losing streak to eight on Wednesday, dropping them down to 12-16. They came up short against the Chula Vista Spartans, falling 13-7. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Spartans this season, with their most recent loss being a 13-4 defeat back in April.
LuisKarlo Hernandez put in work while hitting and pitching. He tossed 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in April. He was also big at the plate, earning one RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
Hernandez wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Fernando Ruiz, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Elijah Lewis was another, going 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and one RBI.
As for Chula Vista, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-14 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games.
Like Southwest SD, Chula Vista also got a great game from a two-way player: Jose De La Cruz. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. De La Cruz has become a key player for Chula Vista: the team is 3-1 when he allows at most three hits, but 10-13 otherwise. De La Cruz was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with three RBI, one triple, and one run. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in hits (three).
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Isaiah Martinez, who went 4-for-5 with four runs, three RBI, and one double. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Cesar Castro, who went 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.
Southwest SD does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Chula Vista, they will square off against Sweetwater at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
