Basketball Recap: Huss Drops Highest Score of Season Against Covenant Day

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Huss). They put the hurt on the Covenant Day Lions with a sharp 81-55 win on Saturday. The team's explosion on offense also rewarded the Huskies with their most commanding win of the season.

Leading Huss to victory were Zaiyir 'Zii' Phillips and Jaleel Smith. Phillips went 8-for-14 on his way to 22 points in addition to seven assists and six steals, while Smith dropped a double-double with 16 points and 11 assists. Smith's afternoon made it nine games in a row in which he has scored at least 16 points. Another player making a difference was Johnterious 'Zach' Anderson, who shot 71% from the field en route to 12 points.

They weren't the only ones working in the assist department: Huss was working as a unit and finished the game with 22 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Covenant Day only racked up nine.

When it comes to explaining why Covenant Day lost, don't look at Dylan Thurman. Despite the final result, he went 7-for-14 to rack up 22 points. Thurman is also on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 50% in the last three games he's played. Luke Thompson was another key player, putting up 13 points.

The victory (which was Huss' third in a row) raised their record to 3-1. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 74.3 points over those games. As for Covenant Day, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-5.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Huss will challenge Palisades at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Covenant Day, they will take on Gaston Day at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Lions will need to watch out since the Spartans have now posted at least 55 points in their last five contests.
