The La Costa Canyon Mavericks will head out on the road to square off against the Coronado Islanders at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. La Costa Canyon is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last four games.
Last Thursday, it was close, but La Costa Canyon sidestepped Carlsbad for a 2-1 win. The victory was all the more spectacular given La Costa Canyon's disadvantage in MaxPreps' California soccer rankings (they are ranked 415th, while Carlsbad is ranked 195th).
La Costa Canyon was led to victory by the tag-team duo of
Meena Shahri and
Avery Baker, who scored both of La Costa Canyon's goals. The pair have combined for a total of seven so far this season.
Meanwhile, Coronado's last contest on Thursday was all defense as neither team scored a goal. They and Point Loma finished up on equal footing with a 0-0 draw. The result (or lack thereof) marked Coronado's first draw of the season.
La Costa Canyon's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-9-1. With that draw, Coronado's record moves to 4-10-1.
La Costa Canyon was able to grind out a solid victory over Coronado in their previous meeting back in December of 2019, winning 3-1. Does La Costa Canyon have another victory up their sleeve, or will Coronado turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
