The Georgetown Day Mighty Hoppers are ranked highly in their home state, and on Friday they took on another highly ranked team in the form of the Poly Engineers. Georgetown Day took a 54-43 hit to the loss column at the hands of Poly. Georgetown Day's defeat continues a unfortunate trend for the squad, making it three in a row.
Despite the defeat, Georgetown Day had strong showings from Madisyn Moore, who scored 20 points along with nine rebounds, and Cai Roberson, who scored 12 points. Moore scored a full 46.5% of Georgetown Day's points, the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Georgetown Day struggled to work together and finished the game with only an assist. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Poly racked up 11 assists.
Poly got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was London Elliot out in front who scored nine points along with ten rebounds and five steals. Those ten rebounds set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Arianna Makumi, who scored ten points along with eight rebounds.
Georgetown Day's defeat was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 6-4. As for Poly, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 7-0.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Georgetown Day will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Maret at 5:00 p.m. on January 3, 2024. Poly will finish 2023 at home by hosting Washington at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Washington will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 74th in West Virginia, while Poly is ranked tenth in Maryland).
