The Chula Vista Spartans's road trip will continue as they head out to face the Canyon Crest Academy Ravens at 9:00 a.m. on January 15th. Hopefully Chula Vista focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Friday.
Chula Vista can now show off six landslide victories after their most recent matchup. They took their match on the road with ease, bagging a 54-16 victory over San Ysidro. With Chula Vista ahead 29-9 at the half, the match was all but over already.
Chula Vista found their leader in underclassman Malissa Mckoy, who scored 24 points along with six rebounds and four steals. That makes it seven consecutive games in which Mckoy has scored at least a third of Chula Vista's points. Ta'mya Lewis was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds.
Even though Canyon Crest Academy has not done well against Vista recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Canyon Crest Academy had just enough and edged Vista out 53-51. The victory was all the more spectacular given Canyon Crest Academy's disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 788th, while Vista is ranked 357th).
Canyon Crest Academy's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Caroline Dysart, who scored 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sofia Colon, who scored 13 points.
The victory got Chula Vista back to even at 10-10. As for Canyon Crest Academy, the victory also got them back to even at 7-7.
Chula Vista came up short against Canyon Crest Academy when the teams last played back in December of 2015, falling 45-38. Can Chula Vista avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
