Charlie Woods, the son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, won his first tournament Wednesday at the Team TaylorMade Invitational in Florida. He fired a final round 66, including six birdies in a nine-hole stretch, to finish 15-under and win by three shots at the Streamsong Resort.
After carding a 70 on the first day, Woods backed that up with a 65 in the second round. He trailed by one shot in the 72-man field entering the third and final round.
Woods, who will by a junior next year at
Benjamin (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), finished 15-under to win by three stokes over Willie Gordon, Luke Colton and Phillip Dunham.
As a freshman, Woods helped Benjamin to the Florida Class 1A state championship. Last fall, he helped the Buccaneers to a runner-up finish.
Monday's opening round was a bizarre card with only three pars on his 2-under round. He posted eight birdies, one eagle, five bogeys and a triple bogey.
But he bounced back with eight birdies Tuesday and a 65 to put him near the top of the leaderboard.
Woods began Wednesday birdie-bogey before draining birdies on 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12 and 14. He held a three-shot lead heading to 15 and parred out for the three-shot victory.
He is ranked No. 606 by the American Junior Golf Association. His previous best finish was a tie for 25th in March.
In addition to winning 13 majors as a professional, Tiger Woods was equally as prolific as an amateur. He won U.S. Junior Amateur three times as well as three U.S. Amateur title. He capped his amateur career with 18 straight match-play victories.
