Burney had lost seven straight at home dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 2-6 to make it eight. They lost 12-5 to the Weed Cougars. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cougars this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 16-6 on Tuesday.
Elliot Compton was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He didn't allow a single earned run over 4.1 innings pitched. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single earned run, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in April of 2025. He was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Fernando Vargas was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
As for Weed, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-1. Considering they have won four matchups by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Burney, Weed also got a great game from a two-way player: Conner Hosino. On the mound, Hosino pitched two innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits. Meanwhile, Jett Marshall struck out six batters over 2.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Hosino has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. At bat, Hosino went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run, while Marshall went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple.
Burney wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 13-2 loss against Loyalton on the 19th. As for Weed, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 15-0 defeat against Durham on the 19th.
