If the Central Spartans were riding high off their 70-34 takedown of the San Ysidro Cougars on Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Central was beaten by Montgomery 68-29 on Thursday. Central was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 41-11.
When it comes to explaining why Central lost, one person who can't be blamed is Mya McClain. Despite the final result, she scored 13 points along with eight rebounds. The matchup was McClain's third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Janelle Thomas, who scored six points.
Jordan Whitehead was her usual excellent self, scoring 24 points along with eight steals and seven rebounds for Montgomery. Those eight steals set a new season-high mark for her. Paula Zumstein was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with five rebounds and three blocks.
Central bumped their record down to 4-7 with that loss, which was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 24.3 points per game. As for Montgomery, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-8.
Central's road trip will continue as they head out to face Escondido Charter at 12:30 p.m. on December 29, 2023. Hopefully Escondido Charter focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Thursday. Montgomery won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Calexico at 3:00 p.m. on December 29, 2023. Calexico is coming into the contest hot, having won their last three games.
