After a string of four wins, the South Tahoe Vikings's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They suffered a rough 64-39 loss at the hands of Fernley. While losing is never fun, South Tahoe can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 34th in California, while Fernley is ranked fourth in Nevada).
South Tahoe lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Carly Cox, who scored five points. Campbell Mathews was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with eight rebounds.
Fernley's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kaiserita Otuafi, who scored 18 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Those 18 points set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Taylor Tollestrup, who scored 18 points along with nine rebounds.
South Tahoe's loss dropped their record down to 8-7. As for Fernley, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 17-1.
South Tahoe is on the road again on Friday and play against Hug at 6:00 p.m. on January 12th. Fernley and Elko will face off at 6:00 p.m. on January 12th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Elko is coming into the match on a five-game losing streak.
