The Buena Bulldogs will challenge the Ventura Cougars at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average, (Buena 4, Ventura 2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Ventura will be up against a hot Buena squad: the team just extended their winning streak to four. Buena came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 5-4 W against Oxnard. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Bulldogs have posted since April 15, 2024.
Brody Kaylor made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Kaylor was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, Gabriel Alonzo was excellent, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-2. That stolen base marked the first that he snagged this season. Another player making a difference was Mason Trigo, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Ventura). They put the hurt on San Marcos with a sharp 8-1 win on Tuesday. The victory continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Royals: they've now won three in a row.
Like Buena, Ventura also got a great game from a two-way player: Wylan Nelson. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Nelson has become a key player for Ventura: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-3-1 otherwise. Nelson was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Carter Kimble, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and four RBI. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Trevor Woodworth was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-2.
Buena pushed their record up to 4-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Ventura, their victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-1-1 and their overall record up to 4-4-1.
Buena suffered a grim 8-1 defeat to Ventura in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Can Buena avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
