Maria Carrillo extended their losing streak to 15 on Friday, dropping them down to 5-18. They lost 19-1 to the Cardinal Newman Cardinals. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cardinals this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 3-0 on Wednesday.
Maria Carrillo saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jaxon Purugganan, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one RBI.
As for Cardinal Newman, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-11. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
On Cardinal Newman's side, Caden Owen made a splash no matter where he played. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, Owen posted two strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2025. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and two doubles. He is becoming a predictor of Cardinal Newman's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 9-11 when he doesn't).
In other pitching news, Legend Haile tossed a big game, striking out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
Back at the plate, Cardinal Newman got a massive performance out of Devlin Chavez, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. That triple marked the first that Chavez has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Jacob Wood, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI.
While Maria Carrillo had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
