Despite the defeat, Taft saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Axel Tsague posted 25 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Tsague is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in each of the last three games he's played dating back to last season. Leading Weslaco to victory were Kai L Fino and Michael Fuentes. L Fino went 9-for-15 on his way to 24 points along with six rebounds and five assists, while Fuentes shot 67% from beyond the arc en route to 24 points and five boards. Those 24 points gave L Fino a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kade Lopez, who shot 50% from the field to rack up 11 points and four steals.
Taft's loss dropped their record down to 0-2.
Looking ahead, Taft will venture away from home to face off against Jay at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Weslaco, they will be defending their home court for the first time this season when they go up against Pace at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
