As many of the high school baseball teams in the South head into postseason play, MaxPreps takes a look at 10 players who are making a strong bid for National Player of the Year honors.
National High School Baseball Player of the Year Watch
Jeremiah Jackson, St. Luke's Episcopal (Mobile, Ala.)One of the top small school players in the nation, Jackson is also a possible high draft pick in the infield in 2019. He ranks among the nation's top home run hitters with 11 and the junior already has 28 in his career. He's batting .652 with 38 runs and 32 RBIs.
Brett Baty, Lake Travis (Austin, Texas)The Cavaliers have been ranked No. 1 in the nation for much of the season and Baty has been the spark plug on offense. He is batting .458 on the season with 29 runs. He also has 19 RBIs and has belted seven doubles and six home runs.
Joe Gray, Hattiesburg (Miss.)Gray is a likely first-round selection in June's Major League Baseball Draft and has been playing like one this season. At the plate, Gray is batting .486 (35-for-72) with 40 runs scored and 28 RBIs. He also leads Hattiesburg, which played in the National High School Invitational, with 11 doubles and five home runs. On the mound, Gray is 4-0 with 37 strikeouts in 22.2 innings pitched.
Stacey Bailey, Kerens (Texas)The current national home run leader with 13, Bailey has a high of three home runs in a 17-0 win over LaPoynor. He also had 41 RBIs and is one of the national leaders with a .698 batting average. His 1.698 slugging percentage easily leads the nation as well.
Nolan Hudi, Calvary Christian (Clearwater, Fla.)Hudi has never lost a high school game as a pitcher, going 18-0 in his two seasons on the mound. He's helped Calvary Christian amass a 52-game win streak during those two seasons. Hudi has allowed one earned run this year in posting an 8-0 record with 69 strikeouts and a 0.14 ERA.
Cory Acton, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.)A potential first-day pick in the MLB Draft, has proven to be the top hitter for a team ranked No. 1 in the nation to start the season. Besides batting .449, he also has team highs in hits (31), runs (30), RBIs (32) and home runs (7). His best outing came in a 21-4 win over Gulliver Prep in which he went 4-for-5 with five runs scored, nine RBIs and three home runs.
Cade Beloso, John Curtis Christian (River Ridge, La.)The Patriots have emerged as one of the top teams in the nation thanks in large part to the play of Beloso. The senior first baseman is among the national home run leaders with 11. He is also batting .456 with 31 runs scored and 28 RBIs.
J.T. Ginn, Brandon (Miss.)The senior infielder has emerged as a top prospect last year after hitting 16 home runs with four grand slams. He has nine home runs this year while hitting .460 with 33 runs and 25 RBIs. Opposing teams have taken note of Ginn's power. After three multi-homer games to start the season, including a three-home run outburst against Hillcrest with a grand slam and nine RBIs, Ginn has been walked 40 times, which makes him the reported national leader in that category.
Rece Hinds, Niceville (Fla.)One of the top-rated juniors in the nation, Hinds has been the driving force behind a Niceville team that is among the best in Florida at 19-1. He's batting .523 with 36 runs scored and 43 RBIs. He's got a slugging percentage of 1.169 with seven doubles, four triples and nine home runs.
CJ Abrams, Blessed Trinity (Roswell, Ga.)Another junior who ranks among the top infielders in the nation, Abrams has helped Blessed Trinity achieve a Top 10 spot in the Xcellent 25 national rankings. He is batting .449 with 29 runs and 17 RBIs. He also leads the team with 32 stolen bases and he has turned 12 double plays on the year.
