Baseball Recap: Helix's Luck Changes for the Better on Monday

Helix was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last matchup, but they sure didn't let that happen against Vista Grande on Monday. The Scotties put the hurt on the Spartans with a sharp 13-0 win. The victory was some much needed relief for the Scotties as it spelled an end to their four-game losing streak.

Romeo Briones made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs and one RBI. He has become a key player for Helix: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 3-5 otherwise.

In other batting news, Helix let Angel Watkins and Jace Sells run wild. Watkins went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run, while Sells went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and four RBI. Watkins is becoming a predictor of Helix's success: when he posts at least three RBI the team is undefeated (and 3-5 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Kie Smith, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Helix kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in three consecutive contests.

Helix now has a winning record of 6-5. As for Vista Grande, with the defeat, they broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 8-6.

Helix has already played their next game, a 6-2 win against Murrieta Mesa on the 31st. As for Vista Grande, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 5-1 victory against Mission Hills on the 31st.
