Basketball Game Preview: Cannon Cougars vs. Covenant Day Lions

Cannon is 10-0 against Covenant Day since February of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Cannon Cougars duke it out with the Covenant Day Lions at 5:30 p.m. Cannon is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 64.8 points per game this season.

Cannon is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of North Carolina's top teams: Providence Day, who was ranked 23rd at the time (Cannon was ranked fifth). Cannon fell just short of Providence Day by a score of 42-40 on Friday. The contest marked the Cougars' lowest-scoring match so far this season.

Despite their loss, Cannon saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Jakaila Gaskin, who went 5 for 7 en route to 15 points and eight rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. Gaskin is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last eight games she's played. Madison Drayton was another key player, putting up 12 points and four steals.

Even though they lost, Cannon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 19 consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Covenant Day came up short against Charlotte Latin on Friday and fell 38-29. The Lions have struggled against the Hawks recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive lost matchup.

Covenant Day's defeat dropped their record down to 14-10. As for Cannon, their loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 21-7.

Everything came up roses for Cannon against Covenant Day in their previous meeting back in January, as the squad secured a 75-28 victory. In that matchup, Cannon amassed a halftime lead of 51-12, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Tuesday.
