Basketball Game Preview: Lawndale Cardinals vs. Hawthorne Cougars

A feisty cat fight will be fought when the Lawndale Cardinals take on the Hawthorne Cougars at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday... Lawndale is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.4 points per game this season.

Hawthorne is hoping to do what Los Amigos couldn't on Wednesday: put an end to Lawndale's winning streak, which now stands at three games. Lawndale strolled past Los Amigos with points to spare, taking the game 60-45.

Lawndale can attribute much of their success to Telayia Fuller, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 boards, and Kalani Pearson, who posted 20 points and seven boards. The match was Pearson's third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Amira Townes, who earned 11 points and three steals.

Lawndale smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in ten consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Hawthorne came into Friday's contest having lost 12 straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They claimed a resounding 42-14 victory over Lennox Academy. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Cougars have posted since December 15, 2023.

The victory got Hawthorne back to even at 1-1. As for Lawndale, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 8-5 record this season.

Lawndale was taken down by Hawthorne 60-10 in their previous matchup back in November of 2022. That game was all but decided by halftime, at which point Lawndale was down 34-6.
