Basketball Recap: Mammoth Takes a Loss

Mammoth lost against Kern Valley back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Mammoth Huskies were beaten by the Kern Valley Broncs 79-17. The Huskies were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 44-11.

Mammoth lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Audrey Borunda, who posted four points and seven rebounds. What's more, Borunda also racked up two assists, the most she's had since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Esme Carrillo, who scored six points.

Leading Kern Valley to victory were Naomi Tapia and Ava Elliott. Tapia went 5 for 12 on her way to 11 points along with seven boards and five steals, while Elliott went 5 of 6 en route to 12 points in addition to seven rebounds and four steals. Elliott has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 16 times she's played. Emmalyn Bechtel also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Mammoth has traveled a rocky road recently having lost seven of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-13 record this season. As for Kern Valley, they pushed their record up to 14-3 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home.

Mammoth didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 59-16 defeat against Bishop Union on the 28th. Kern Valley has also already played their next contest, a 56-33 win against Boron on the 28th.
