The Westview Wolverines will take on the San Dieguito Academy Mustangs in a tournament on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Westview has four straight victories, San Dieguito Academy has five straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
While Westview didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They put the hurt on Mater Dei Catholic with a sharp 12-2 win on Saturday. That looming 12-2 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Wolverines yet this season.

Joseph Arango-Manley made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3. Westview is undefeated when Arango-Manley posts two or more stolen bases, but 1-2 otherwise.
In other batting news, Ethan Holeman was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-5. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Irvine, who scored a run and stole three bases while going 1-for-4.
Meanwhile, San Dieguito Academy didn't have quite enough to beat Bishop's on Friday and fell 2-1.
Cameron Kalt was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (three).
San Dieguito Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Westview, their victory bumped their record up to 5-2.
San Dieguito Academy's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Westview has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for San Dieguito Academy, though, as they've been averaging only 3.2 strikeouts. Will Westview keep running through batters, or will San Dieguito Academy buck the trend?
Westview came out on top in a nail-biter against San Dieguito Academy in their previous meeting back in March of 2023, sneaking past 5-4. Does Westview have another victory up their sleeve, or will San Dieguito Academy turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
