Video: Incredible 85-79 playoff gameThe
Staunton River (Moneta, Va.) football team has been scoring in bunches all season, mostly in lopsided victories.
But the Golden Eagles needed every one of their 12 touchdowns in a wild 85-79 win over
Western Albemarle (Crozet, Va.) in a second-round Group 3A West playoff game on Friday night.
According to the
Roanoke Times,
Grayson Overstreet rushed for 236 yards and five touchdowns and his team rushed for 611 overall in the second-highest scoring game in Virginia High School League history. Staunton River (8-4) has now scored 527 points on the season.
While Staunton River ran through the Western Albemarle defense all night, Warriors quarterback
Sam Hearn threw for 569 yards and five touchdowns. The teams combined for 1,357 yards.
Ironically, it was a defensive play that saved the day for Staunton River. In the final seconds, Hearn drove his team to the Golden Eagles' 28 but
Noah Dellis intercepted his second pass of the game to seal it.
Dellis had earlier returned an interception for touchdown for the Golden Eagles (8-4).
The highest-scoring game in VHSL history, according to the Times, was a 193-0 win for Kingsport (Tenn.) over Norton in 1925.
That made this the highest-scoring game between two Virginia teams in a VHSL game.
