Emiliano Hernandez and Hunter Salinas were among the main playmakers for Nixon as the former rushed for 64 yards and two scores and the latter threw for 134 yards and one TD. What's more, Salinas racked up 115.1 passer rating, the most he's had since back in October of 2024.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Nixon was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 219 rushing yards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their rushing yard total in three consecutive games.
Nixon didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The team can thank two different players for their defensive prowess: Pablo De Leon and David Cedillo, who each picked up one interception apiece. Another thorn in South San Antonio's side was De Leon, who picked up three sacks and made 15 total tackles (4.0 for loss) in addition to snagging an interception.
Meanwhile, Southwest Legacy blew past Cigarroa, posting a 57-18 win. The Titans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three contests by 28 points or more this season.
Nixon better keep an eye on Aiden Garcia. He was instrumental in Southwest Legacy's win, throwing for 279 yards and four touchdowns while completing 80% of his passes, and also punching in one TD on the ground. James Ross helped Garcia out on the ground, rushing for 79 yards, while also catching one score.
One reason for the win was Southwest Legacy's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for six sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Henry Hernandez and Eli Sanchez, who racked up four sacks between them. Hernandez is crushing it when it comes to sacks: he's posted at least one every time he's taken the field this season.
Southwest Legacy's record is now 5-0. As for Nixon, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Nixon has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 155.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Southwest Legacy struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 200.2 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Nixon came up short against Southwest Legacy in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, falling 24-14. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
