Even though the El Capitan Vaqueros have not done well against the Mount Miguel Matadors recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. El Capitan took their contest on the road with ease, bagging a 70-13 win over the Matadors. Given El Capitan's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 323rd, while the Matadors are ranked 1198th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
El Capitan's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Keira Heinricy led the charge by scoring 19 points along with three steals. Heinricy hasn't dropped below 18 points for six straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Lilly Williams, who scored 14 points along with four steals.
Despite the loss, Mount Miguel saw an underclassman step up: AJ Jones scored 11 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Jones has scored all season.
El Capitan has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matches, which provided a massive bump to their 17-9 record this season. As for Mount Miguel, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-22.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. El Capitan will square off against the Foothillers at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Grossmont sitting on three straight wins and the Vaqueros on six. As for Mount Miguel, they will head out on the road to challenge the Eagles at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
