Given Gwynn Park's advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 30th in Maryland, while Hayfield is ranked 90th in Virginia), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Hayfield lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Owen Pottenburgh, who scored four points along with ten rebounds. Pottenburgh has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last four times he's played. Andy Ramirez was another key contributor, scoring four points along with 12 rebounds.
Hayfield struggled to work together and finished the game with only three assists. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Gwynn Park's win was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-0. As for Hayfield, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 7-5.
Gwynn Park will take on Potomac at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Hayfield, they will head out on the road to face off against Justice at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Justice is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
