Even though the El Capitan Vaqueros have not done well against the Mount Miguel Matadors recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. El Capitan blew past Mount Miguel, posting a 77-29 victory at home. With that win, El Capitan brought their scoring average up to 50.4 points per game.
Leading El Capitan to victory were Keira Heinricy and Paige Worthem. Heinricy scored 18 points along with seven rebounds, while Worthem scored 17 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Another player making a difference was Emily Sample, who scored eight points along with three steals.
Despite the loss, Mount Miguel saw an underclassman step up: Jaylene Hughes scored 17 points. That was a full 58.6% of Mount Miguel's points, marking the 20th time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Satari Jay, who scored eight points.
Mount Miguel struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only two offensive rebounds. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as El Capitan pulled down 12 offensive rebounds.
El Capitan's win bumped their record up to 12-9. As for Mount Miguel, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-18.
El Capitan won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Mt. Carmel at 11:30 a.m. on January 20th. Mt. Carmel is looking to tack on another W to their three-game streak on the road. As for Mount Miguel, they will take on Helix at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Helix is coming into the game hot, having won their last five games.
