It'll be a Battle of the Birds when Granite Hills Eagles duke it out with Torrey Pines Falcons at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Granite Hills 2.6, Torrey Pines 3.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Granite Hills saw some tournament action on Wednesday. They walked away with a 7-2 win over Patrick Henry.
Granite Hills got a great performance from Luke Bailey as he struck out seven batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits (and not a single walk).
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Parker Vance, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs he has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Anthony Miotti, who scored a run while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Torrey Pines got themselves on the board against Vista Grande on Wednesday, but Vista Grande never followed suit. They were the clear victors by a 6-0 margin over the Spartans. Considering the Falcons have won four matches by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Torrey Pines' victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Jack Swanberg, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Ryder Young was another, scoring a run while going 2-for-2.
Granite Hills pushed their record up to 7-0-2 with the win, which was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Torrey Pines, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Granite Hills has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Torrey Pines struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
