Polytechnic and Rio Hondo Prep are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2020, but not for long. The Panthers will venture away from home to take on the Kares at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Polytechnic is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.3 points per game this season.
Polytechnic is headed into the matchup out to prove that what happened against Flintridge Prep on Friday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. The Panthers were dealt a 73-37 defeat at the hands of the Wolves. The Panthers were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 35-15.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Areni Ohanian, who went 5-for-12 to rack up 11 points and seven boards. Another player making a difference was Lori Ohanian, who posted six points and three steals.
Meanwhile, Rio Hondo Prep had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 28.5 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They blew past the Cubs, posting a 59-16 victory. The Kares have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five contests by 25 points or more this season.
Polytechnic better focus on containing BRYCE JOHNSON and TARA RILEY as the pair were huge in Rio Hondo Prep's win. JOHNSON put up 16 points, while RILEY dropped a double-double with ten points and 14 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of ALLIE SCOTT, who scored five points and five steals.
Rio Hondo Prep smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in five consecutive games.
Rio Hondo Prep's win bumped their record up to 8-6. As for Polytechnic, their loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 13-5.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Polytechnic has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 35.4 boards per game. However, it's not like Rio Hondo Prep struggles in that department as they've been averaging 35.5 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Polytechnic strolled past Rio Hondo Prep in their previous meeting back in December of 2025 by a score of 59-44. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Panthers since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
