Samantha Edge made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Mount Vernon got a massive performance out of Olivia Baird, who scored two runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-4. With that strong performance, Baird is now averaging an impressive 1.1 stolen bases per game. Trinity Barron was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
Mount Vernon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in five consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Sulphur Springs got the win against Pleasant Grove on Tuesday by a conclusive 7-1. The Wildcats haven't had any issues with the Hawks recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Like Mount Vernon, Sulphur Springs also got a great game from a two-way player: Hannah Speed. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 15 over seven innings pitched. Speed was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.
Speed wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Gracie Thompson, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Mount Vernon has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 15 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-4-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.6 runs over those games. Sulphur Springs' win bumped their record up to 17-4.
Friday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Mount Vernon has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .445. However, it's not like Sulphur Springs struggles in that department as they've averaged .458. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
