Given Coalinga's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 415th, while Tranquillity is ranked 1335th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Coalinga's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Julia Gressman, who scored 14 points along with three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Gressman has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Cecilia Perez, who scored eight points along with three steals.
Avenal suffered their biggest defeat yet this season on Friday. They were outmatched by Mendota at home and fell 86-11. Avenal was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 46-9.
Coalinga's victory was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 16-3. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 62.7 points per game. As for Avenal, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-12.
