The Bovina Mustangs were the 38-26 winner over the Lockney Longhorns when they last played one another back in November of 2022, but their luck changed this time around. Bovina took a hard 50-36 fall against Lockney on Friday. Bovina just can't catch a break and has now endured three losses in a row.
Despite the defeat, Bovina saw an underclassman step up: Angel Lara rushed for 197 yards and a touchdown while picking up 9.9 yards per carry, and also picked up 96 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Lara's longest reception was for an incredible 78 yards. Daniel Herrera was another key contributor, throwing for 226 yards and two touchdowns.
Xavier Jimenez got back to being his usual excellent self, as he rushed for 298 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 8.1 yards per carry. Jimenez hasn't dropped below sixsolo tackles for three straight games. Dyllan Thiebaud was another major influence, as he rushed for 80 yards and ran in a TD.
Bovina's defeat was their sixth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their record down to 2-8. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 8-2 Lubbock Christian and 9-3 Sudan (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 65.5% over those games). As for Lockney, their victory bumped their record up to 7-2.
Bovina does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Lockney will be playing in front of their home fans against Morton at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
