The Escambia Gators will face off against the Pensacola Catholic Crusaders at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Escambia is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Escambia didn't have quite enough to beat West Florida and fell 3-2. The Gators have struggled against the Jaguars recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost meeting.
Abbie Freeman spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on three hits.
On the hitting side, Escambia saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Madelynn Ladner, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.
Meanwhile, Pensacola Catholic waltzed into their game on Monday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They blew past the Tigers 17-7.
Pensacola Catholic got a massive performance out of Lela Laurence, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Laurence is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played. Sam Foster was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs and one RBI.
Pensacola Catholic kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 3.5 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 9.6.
Pensacola Catholic pushed their record up to 7-11 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.7 runs over those games. As for Escambia, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-7.
Pensacola Catholic's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Escambia has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Pensacola Catholic, though, as they've been averaging only 2.2 strikeouts. Will Escambia keep running through batters, or will the Crusaders buck the trend?
Everything went Escambia's way against Pensacola Catholic when the teams last played back in March, as Escambia made off with a 15-4 win. Will the Gators repeat their success, or do the Crusaders have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
