Basketball Recap: Rio Rico Takes a Loss

Rio Rico lost against Douglas two weeks ago and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Rio Rico Hawks took a blow against the Douglas Bulldogs, falling 83-51. The Hawks have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Despite the loss, Rio Rico still got an impressive performance from Santiago Merino, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten boards. Those ten rebounds gave Merino a new career-high. Francisco Alday was another key player, putting up seven points and nine boards.

Douglas was led to victory by Diego Lopez and Cesar Duran. Lopez went 8 of 15 en route to 24 points and six rebounds, while Duran went 8 for 13 on his way to 19 points. Lopez's evening made it six games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Elmer Maytorena, who posted seven points along with seven assists and three steals.

Rio Rico's defeat dropped their record down to 2-18. As for Douglas, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-7.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Rio Rico will face off against Sahuarita at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Rio Rico is facing Sahuarita at the right time seeing as Sahuarita is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Douglas, they will take on Cholla at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Douglas is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 70.4 points per game this season.
