The Hilmar Yellowjackets lost against the Hughson Huskies back in January of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. Hilmar lost to Hughson on the road by a decisive 50-34 margin. While losing is never fun, Hilmar can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 673rd, while Hughson is ranked 323rd).
Despite the loss, Hilmar still got an impressive performance from Alicia Souza, who dropped a triple-double on 14 points, 17 rebounds, and ten steals. Souza is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Emma Gomes, who scored four points along with 12 rebounds and three steals.
Even though they lost, Hilmar smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Kareena Kang was her usual excellent self, scoring 15 points along with six steals for Hughson. Kang hasn't dropped below two steals for five straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Raegan Barstow, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Hilmar's defeat dropped their record down to 9-6. As for Hughson, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 12-6.
Hilmar will be playing at home against Ripon Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Hughson, they will head out on the road to face off against Riverbank at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Riverbank focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Tuesday.
