Surry Central is 0-10 against Mount Airy since February of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Surry Central Golden Eagles will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the Mount Airy Granite Bears at 4:30 p.m. Surry Central knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past five contests -- so hopefully Mount Airy likes a good challenge.
Surry Central scored the most points they've had all season to find success last Friday. They blew past West Wilkes 95-63 on the road. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Surry Central to victory, but perhaps none more so than Tripp Mcmillen, who scored 18 points along with six assists and four steals. The game was Mcmillen's seventh in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Mason Cox, who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and six assists.
Meanwhile, everything went Mount Airy's way against Elkin on Thursday as Mount Airy made off with a 62-40 win. Given Mount Airy's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 242nd, while Elkin is ranked 605th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Surry Central is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 4-3 record this season. As for Mount Airy, their victory bumped their record up to 3-1.
Things could have been worse for Surry Central, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 75-57 loss to Mount Airy when the teams last played back in February. Can Surry Central avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
