Even though the Williamson Warriors have not done well against the Athens Wildcats recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. Williamson took their game at home with ease, bagging a 46-16 win over Athens. Given Williamson's advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 272nd, while Athens is ranked 587th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Williamson's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Taylor Rae Jones led the charge by scoring 13 points along with nine rebounds and seven steals. That makes it four consecutive games in which Jones has scored at least 25% of Williamson's points. Another player making a difference was Madisen Jones, who scored nine points along with seven steals.
The victory makes it two in a row for Williamson and bumps their season record up to 9-2. As for Athens, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-7.
Williamson will head out on the road to face off against Sayre at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Athens, they will look to defend their home court on Saturday against Wellsboro at 7:30 p.m. Wellsboro's defense has only allowed 30 points per game this season, so Athens' offense will have their work cut out for Athens.
