The Marquette Catholic Explorers are taking a road trip to challenge the Wesclin Warriors at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
Staunton hit Marquette Catholic with a four-run seventh inning on Saturday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Explorers took a 7-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Bulldogs. The Explorers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Marquette Catholic got a good showing from Cohen Green, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off six hits. Green has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Robert Roentz was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Joe Stephan, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one double.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Wesclin, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. Everything went their way against Vandalia on Saturday as they made off with an 11-2 victory. The high-scoring effort was just what the Warriors needed considering they were shut out in their previous contest.
Landon Jacobsen made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Jacobsen was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Wesclin got a massive performance out of Layne Hays, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most hits Hays has posted since back in March of 2025. Ayden Peterson was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Wesclin was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .484. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Wesclin pushed their record up to 8-12 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 7 runs. As for Marquette Catholic, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-12.
Marquette Catholic beat Wesclin 6-1 in their previous matchup back in May of 2025. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Explorers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
