This week's National Football Stat Stars feature several athletes who tied or broke state records, including the son of an NFL Hall of Famer.
Michael Irvin of Prestonwood Christian (Plano, Texas),
tied the Texas state record for receptions in a game with 22 in a 69-36 loss to IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.). Irvin's 22 receptions covered 229 yards and were good for two touchdowns.
Prestonwood Christian quarterback Ryan Cash threw for 616 yards in the loss. Cash was one of two players to throw for over 600 yards in a game last week. The other was Chance Short of Fairland (Ohio), who had 601 yards in a 79-69 loss to Meigs, however that total was not reported to the MaxPreps statistical database. Cash's total is the fourth-highest total in Texas history.
Meanwhile in Missouri, Glendale (Springfield, Mo.) quarterback Alex Austin has emerged as one of the national passing leaders early in the season, thanks in part to the offensive installed by new head coach Mike Mauk. As a coach at Kenton (Ohio), Mauk had several quarterbacks lead the nation in passing yardage. Austin could be the next as he completed 45 of 75 passes for 456 yards and five touchdowns in a 53-48 loss to West Plains (Mo.).
Austin's 45 completions ties a state record held by Kory Faulkner of Ste. Genevieve. His 75 attempts is a new state record in Missouri, breaking the old mark of 71 held by Cole Mankuna of Windsor-Imperial.
