Texas sharpshooters
Sadie Sanchez of
Randall (Amarillo) and
Aaliyah Chavez of
Monterey (Lubbock) led a trio of players during the 2023-24 girls high school basketball season who broke the single-season 3-point shooting mark.
Prior to last season, only one player in history had ever made more than 176 3-pointers in a season. By the end of this past season, Sanchez, Chavez and freshman
Kaleena Smith of
Ontario Christian (Ontario, Calif.) has surpassed that total.
RECORD BOOK: 2023-24 season updatesSanchez averaged 26.9 points per game and finished with 191 triples. The total topped the old record of 186 set by Jordyn Lewis of
Ramah (N.M.) in 2016.
Aaliyah Chavez of Monterey is one of three players to break the single-season 3-point record in 2023-24. Chavez was four behind Sanchez with 187 3-pointers, also topping Lewis for No. 2 on the all-time list. The MaxPreps National Junior of the Year averaged 37.8 points per game and also jumped up to 22nd place on the all-time career 3-point list with 445. Chavez's 1,345 points this year rank 16th all-time.
Smith is No. 4 on the all-time list, finishing eight back of Chavez with 179. Like Sanchez and Chavez, Smith is an underclassman, earning MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year honors.
The trio of sharpshooters were among a group of players who were the most recent additions to the
MaxPreps National High School Girls Basketball Record Book.
Jamonica Chambers of
Vigor (Prichard, Ala.) tied the national record for single-season blocked shots with 322. Trinity Pulliam of
Chilton County (Clanton, Ala.) set the record last year, knocking WNBA All-Star Brittany Griner of
Nimitz (Houston, Texas) from the top spot with 318 blocks.
Joyce Edwards of
Camden (S.C.) joined the career field goals list, coming in at No. 12 with 1,582. Edwards was also the top entry from 2024 on the career points list, jumping to No. 42 all-time with 3,966.
Chavez is No. 26 on the career 3-pointers list and three players joined her this season, all entering the top 10.
Saniya Burks of
Rice (Texas) comes in at No. 25 on the all-time single-game points list with 75. Meanwhile,
Iasia Anderson of
Chilton County (Clanton, Ala.) entered the career steals list at No. 18 with 874.
