The Albany Cougars will face off against the Miramonte Matadors at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Albany is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.9 runs per game this season.
Albany hadn't beaten De Anza on the road since May 5, 2021 but that history sure didn't bother them on Friday. The Cougars put the hurt on the Dons with a sharp 15-4 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cougars.
Bennett Lee looked comfortable as he pitched four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Mikey Richards, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Preston McGowen, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Miramonte can bid farewell to their nine-game losing streak thanks to their game on Wednesday. They never let Freedom get on the board and left with a 1-0 victory. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Matadors have posted since May 2, 2024.
Miramonte saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ian Hughes, who went 1-for-3 with one double. That double was Hughes' first of the season.
Miramonte's victory bumped their record up to 2-9. As for Albany, their win bumped their record up to 9-4.
Miramonte's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Albany has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.3 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Miramonte, though, as they've been averaging only 3.8 strikeouts. Will Albany keep running through batters, or will the Matadors buck the trend?
Albany took their victory against Miramonte when the teams last played back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 8-2 score. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Matadors turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
