The Marina Vikings are taking a road trip to face off against the Newport Harbor Sailors at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Marina has now lost eight straight, leaving the team hunting for their first win since the 8th.
On Friday, Marina came up short against Fountain Valley and fell 6-3. That's two games in a row now that the Vikings have lost by exactly three runs.
Marina saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was NICHOLAS MURREY, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double.
Meanwhile, Newport Harbor faced Huntington Beach in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Sailors walked away with a 6-3 win over the Oilers. The game was the first time the Sailors have beaten the Oilers on their field since March 11, 2022.
Lucas Perez made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up three earned runs off seven hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run.
In other batting news, Ryan Williams and Wyatt Gahm did most of the damage at the plate: Williams went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Gahm went 2-for-4 with one home run. That double marked the first that Williams has hit this season. Adam Martin was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Newport Harbor lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in March.
Newport Harbor has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.9 runs on average over those games. As for Marina, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-16.
Marina couldn't quite finish off Newport Harbor when the teams last played back in April of 2024 and fell 3-1. Can the Vikings avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
